THE MODERN LOVERS
There will be approximately 15 Individual 7
ft. by 5 ft. paintings shown in the main gallery space. The paintings all join
up to make one large comic strip that can be viewed around the whole gallery.
The paintings are based on a comic character in a well-known comic called "The
Beano" from England where the artist grew up reading tales of these colourful
stories.
The paintings focus on "Minnie the Minx", a naughty
school girl whose main goal in life is to get into trouble and avoiding
punishment for her rebellious ways. She wears a black beret with an orange pom
pom on top and a black and orange striped jumper. In the original comic strip,
Minnie the Minx spends her days plotting schemes to get extra pocket money to
buy more sweets and yummy cake. She is also known to throw water balloons at the
innocent children around her. These large scale paintings, however, are based on
Minnie the Minx dealing with slightly more adult issues (but, not much). Same
character but, not so much "minxing" rather, more of her comments on living in
New York City as a grown up, outsider and most definitely a stranger to what is
going on around her as an adult. All of this delightfully painted in a comic
strip style. |
